quARTo is an artist duo founded in 2003 by Anna af Sillén de Mesquita and Leandro Zappala. quARTo exists as an interdisciplinary platform. Based in Stockholm they live between Brazil and Sweden collaborating and interacting with other artists, researchers, academics and institutions devoted to research and development in the art field.

A driving force for the duo is: Believe in what we create and only do what we believe in. This assumption can be understood as an ethical ground, the starting point for all proposals and initiatives. An artistic translation of the lifestyle they have chosen as a duo, in full symbiosis with their quest.

Another factor that defines quARTo’s propositions is that they are in permanent dialogue in-between two distinct continents, dealing with different working conditions, politics, economies, cultures, infrastructure etc. Placing them in constant challenges and impermanence in a transient and nomadic route.

The duo understands choreography as an organization in time / space that is translated into works that challenge the limits and notions of the body through an extreme physical demand. The path where critical thinking is to transform such physical experiences in different places, languages and processes of continuity in choreographic work, video, music, theater or installations which never reaches an end but rather are intertwined in each other.

They produce their works through long-term projects that can last for periods of two years, through grants for research, awards, public funding, artistic residencies and co-productions. quARTo´s works have been performed internationally in contexts such as museums, galleries, theaters and festivals.
