The performance-duo QUARTO consists of Anna af Sillén de Mesquita and Leandro Zappala. In between 2003 until now they have created 3 series in 3 parts: WIP, BEAUTY and ROPE, which are not trilogies in a classical sense but rather a long-term research, each piece is autonomous and yet intertwined, creating a sense of coherency.

They invest in a long-term research within interdisciplinary art, deeply rooted in the interaction between theory and practice, together with artists and researchers. Engaged in philosophical questions regarding power relations and the limits of the body, they seek to generate thought and subjectivity through a radical, visual and physical experience.

Anna and Leandro live and work between two different cultures, the Brazilian and the Swedish.

The life between two distinct continents characterizes their work and provides constant challenges. Their work has been shown internationally at museums, in different venues and galleries throughout the world, here are some of the places: Netherlands (Frascati Theater), Russia (Solyanka State Gallery), Sweden (Moderna Museet, MDT, Dansens Hus, Norrlandsoperan), Germany (Ludwig Forum Museum of Modern Art, Uferstudios, Tanzhaus nrw, IFA Gallery Berlin), Lebanon (Sursock Museum of Modern Art), Brazil (Panorama Festival), Denmark (Dansehallerne, Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art), Portugal (Serralves Museum of Modern Art), Austria (DONAU Festival), UK (Fierce Festival), Serbia (BITEF / Kondenz Festival), Uruguay (FIDCU – International Dance Festival of Uruguay and NIDO-Campo Abierto), Estonia (Notafe Festival), Chile (NAVE – OTROSUR), Poland (Stary Browar Nowy Taniec / Malta Festival).

2018 QUARTO receives the Birgit Cullberg award.

From the jury’s motivation: ”QUARTO works in the present moment using chance as a tool. They question our time by challenging human meaning and existence. They place themselves outside their own self, dehumanizing themselves and the viewer. They portray life, death and our world. QUARTO is a resistance movement to the twenty-first century’s accelerated time.”
